Do you know how many people think of starting a blog everyday? Well, even I don’t know that as a matter of fact but my point is that, while it is quite easy to think about starting a blog, it is equally and sometimes even more tough to actually start a blog and write captivating articles to hook the readers and followers. Besides, keeping the blog updated with regular posts is another daunting task. Here, I will try to help the newborn bloggers (myself included, haha) with what I have probably learnt from my experiences so far!! So, read on..
- HOOK THEM WITH THE FIRST SENTENCE
Admittedly, this is the hardest part of writing a blog post. The first sentence should be able to reel in the reader, and at the same time, give them an idea what the post will be all about.
One can start with a:
- Thought-provoking question– “Do you know …….?”
- Quote– “Ernest Hemingway once said: ‘There is nothing to writing. All you do is sitting down at a typewriter and bleed.’
- Statistic– “According to the Official Study Report of XYZ organization…..”
- Story – “The other day, I had experienced……….”
- UNDERSTANDING THE AUDIENCE
Before starting to write, one should have a clear understanding of the target audience.
- A TOPIC AND WORKING TITLE
Before one even write anything, he/she needs to pick a relevant topic for the blog post. The topic can be pretty general to start with.
- Start with a working title.
- It’s important to keep the title accurate and clear.
- Sneak in some keywords in there (only if it’s natural, though!).
- Finally, to see if one can shorten it at all, the better it is.
- WRITING A CAPTIVATING INTRODUCTION
First, a well written introduction is very important to grab the reader’s attention. Tell a story or a joke, be empathetic or grip the reader with an interesting fact or statistic.
5. ORGANIZING THE CONTENT
Sometimes, blog posts can have an overwhelming amount of information. It is advisable to organize the information so that readers are not intimidated by the length or amount of content.
Outlining the post before writing makes it easier to know which points should be covered and in which order.
- EDITING/PROOFREADING THE POST
The editing process is the most important part of blogging. One should always keep the following advice in mind…
Make sure to choose a visually appealing and relevant image for the post. As social networks treat content with images more prominently, visuals are now more responsible for the success of a blog in social media.
No one likes an ugly blog post. It’s not just pictures that make a post visually appealing — it’s the formatting and organization of the post too.
Header and sub-headers should be used to break up large blocks of text and with uniform styling.
Tags are specific, public-facing keywords that describe a post. They also allow readers to browse for more content in the same category on a blog. One should try to put some thought into a tagging strategy.
- OPTIMIZE FOR ON-PAGE SEO
After finishing writing, one should go back and optimize the post for search.
No need to obsess over how many keywords to include. If there are opportunities to incorporate targeted keywords, it should be done only if it doesn’t impact the reader’s experience.
- END WITH A PUNCHY CONCLUSION
Now, it’s time to write the conclusion, which is just as hard to write as (if not harder than) the introduction. One can either end with a thought-provoking question or a call-to-action or restate the main point of the topic.
So, this is what I have learnt so far from my blogging endeavor and hope to learn many more things in the process. Tell me what you guys have learnt from your blogging experiences in the comments below. Eager to learn new things !
Love till the next post..
